The Villa Padilla, founded by José de Escandón on the 6 of January of 1749, on the right bank of the Purificación River, under the name of San Antonio de Padilla, was known in the Colony with the name of San Antonio de Padilla, in honor of Mrs. María Padilla, wife of the Viceroy Conde de Revillagigedo.

The Villa was founded with 41 settlers, from Rio Blanco, Linares and Hidalgo, who were basically dedicated to livestock, agriculture and fishing.

5 1824 of July of 1825 at the end of January, was the capital of the State, having installed the first Constituent Congress in July of 1824.

Flooded by the waters of the Vicente Guerrero dam in 1970, which was built in order to obtain and control water from the Corona, Purificación and Pilón rivers, so the population was previously transferred to the Nueva Villa de Padilla.

At the moment the municipality is formed by the municipal head, two adjunct colonies denominated "Vicente guerrero" and "Luís Donaldo Colosio", in addition to 22 ejidos.

  • 1824 Installation of the first Constituent Congress. The 19 of July shoots Agustín de Iturbide, later the General Mier y Terán commits suicide.
  • 1825 First Capital of the State, the 5 of July.
  • 1970 Evacuation of the old town, at the conclusion of the Vicente Guerrero Dam.
  • 1971 September 27, inauguration of the Vicente Guerrero Dam.

Historical monuments

Stresses the monument that marks the site where Agustín de Iturbide was shot, also buried by the Vicente Guerrero Dam. In recent years, a monument to Juan Báez Guerra was erected, an agrarian fighter. The Juarez monument is located in the main square.

Architectural monuments

Its architectural wealth was buried under the waters in the Vicente Guerrero Dam, as they were: the Hacienda de San Juan, La Generala; parish of San Antonio de Padua; Hacienda of San Francisco.

Popular parties

The June 13 celebrates the festivities in honor of the patron saint, San Antonio de Padua.

The municipal head is located in the city of Nuevo Padilla, located at 24º3 'north latitude and 98º37' west longitude, at a height of 153 meters above sea level. It is located in the central portion of the State, on the hydrological basin of the Purificación River.

The municipality borders on the North with the Municipalities of San Carlos and Jiménez; to the South with that of Cd. Victoria y Casas; to the East with Casas y Jiménez and to the West with Hidalgo and Güémez. Its territorial extension is 1,316.96 square kilometers, which represents the 1.69 percent of the total of the entity. The most important localities are: Nuevo Padilla, El Barretal, Corpus Christi, Santa Juana, Martyrs of Chinameca, La Soledad, Jesus Silva Sandoval, Vicente Guerrrero, Las Conchas and San Patricio.


The hydrological resources of the municipality are very high because the territory is located in the purification basin of the river, which traverses it transversely from west to east, taking its flow to the Vicente Guerrero dam, which is located in all the extension on the municipal territory, occupying an 20 percent of its surface.

The most important rivers and streams that flow into the dam are: San Carlos, Pilón, Corona, San Marcos, Santa Rosa, Arroyo Sarnoso and el Grande.


In the whole of the municipality dry climates are detected very hot and warm with rain in summer and scarce throughout the year. Temperatures range between 1ºC (minimum) and 43ºC (maximum). The average rainfall is of the order of 700 cubic millimeters.


The northern and southern parts are flat and in the central part a semi-flat strip with slope from 6 to 18 percent is located.

Classification and land use

In the municipality, the predominant soils are vertisols with aptitude for agriculture. Land tenure is as follows: 23,235.60 hectares belong to the ejidal regime and the remaining 84,864.00 hectares are small landowners and national lands.

Flora and fauna

The types of vegetation in the municipality are presented in two associations, predominantly the tall and thorny scrub. On the banks of the Purificación River, the vegetation is formed by thorny deciduous forests. In the margins of the Vicente Guerrero dam, you can find varied species such as wild boar, white-tailed deer, hare, rabbit, wild cat, rattlesnake and coral snake, as well as migratory species such as anatidae and white-wing pigeon.
