Early stimulation

Given the need to contribute to the establishment of programs that prioritize health care and promotion strategies, a series of programs aimed at preserving and promoting good child development and growth have been developed.

That is why the Start-Up Program in Life, has as its main objective to promote the health of the mother and the child from its conception until two years of age. A substantive component of this Program is related to Well-Developed Girls and Boys who are considered within the activities of Integrated Care, Development Evaluation in the gross, fine, language and social motor areas, and the application of specific activities of Early Stimulation (ET).

The early stimulation program is essential since most of the brain development occurs before the child reaches 2 years and it is in this small period when children acquire the ability to think, speak, learn and reason, in addition the foundations are formed of the social behaviors that will mark them throughout life.

The beneficial effects of early stimulation in childhood development are indisputable, a person who is well developed physically, mentally, socially and emotionally, because it was stimulated since childhood, will have better opportunities than a person who was not. Since undesirable effects have also been investigated, when adequate sensory stimulation has been suppressed.

Achieve training and practice of Early Stimulation techniques by those responsible for the care of the child through the staff of the Health Centers and Hospital Units, to promote the neurological development of children in Tamaulipas.

Girls and boys of Tamaulipas with the full development of their abilities by virtue of their genetic potential.

Unify health personnel criteria of the first level of care and outpatient consultation of the second level units, so that within the Integrated Care for children under five years:

  • Perform the evaluation of growth and development.
  • Provide training to the mother or head of the child in early stimulation techniques linked to the degree of development for the age of her child.
  • Early identify risk factors and alterations in development, intervene in a timely manner and, if applicable, refer the child to the corresponding level of care.
  • It is a set of actions that tend to provide the healthy child with the experiences it needs to develop its development potential to the maximum.
  • Develop and strengthen the five senses and perception.
  • Favors the development of higher mental functions (memory, imagination, attention, language development).
  • Develop in the child confidence, security and autonomy.
  • It allows to increase the affective and positive relationship between the parents and the child.

Technical Bases

  • Several researches in the field of sciences, national and international, have demonstrated the importance of early attention in the different capacities of the human being.
  • The moments when environmental events can have a regulatory influence on development are called "critical periods".
  • In the human being they comprise the first two years.
  • Critical periods are crucial for the proper functioning of sensory systems, as well as for the execution of complex behavior patterns.

For the foregoing:
It is important to include 0 at 2 years of age, an assessment of gross, fine, social and language psychomotor development, in order to detect any alteration or problem and prevent timely, applying early stimulation techniques.

Early stimulation
It is one more component of integrated care, understood as the set of actions that health personnel must provide to the girl or child under two years of age, in each assistance to a health unit, regardless of the reason for the consultation.

The Early Stimulation can be carried out in:

  • The office with only one child (face to face).
  • In groups with children of the same age.

Procedures for implementation

The Early Stimulation can be carried out in:

  • The office with only one child (face to face).
  • In groups with children of the same age.

In order to work with early stimulation, the following must be taken into account:

  • Favor accessibility to the service.
  • The physical area must have adequate ventilation, temperature and lighting.
  • The indispensable furniture is a piece of furniture or box to store the material and a mattress or mat to place it on a table or the floor.
  • There must be material for evaluation and activities.
  • The material that is required can be prepared by health personnel and the community.
Socioeconomic aspects:

  • Characteristics of the house.
  • Kind of family.
  • Family income
  • Schooling of the mother.
  • Orphanhood or state of social abandonment.

Perinatal Risk

  • Maternal disease
  • Complications in pregnancy.
  • Complications in childbirth
  • Prematurity
  • Birth weight.
  • Delivery care by non-qualified personnel.

  • Weight / age
  • Size weight.
  • Head circunference.

Classify children into three groups according to the state of their development:

  1. Green: Children whose neurological development is adequate (for whom early stimulation is only a complement).
  2. Yellow: Those children who identify with alterations in certain areas and who can be acted on by giving parents guidance.
  3. Red: Those who show signs of alarm to a serious developmental delay confirmed by the unit doctor and who should be referred to second level.
The sessions that correspond to the advice and training of the parents, are organized by quoting groups of parents or caregiver-child by groups of 1 to 10 binomials that are studying the same stage of development.

Early Stimulation Groups:

  1. 0 to 3 months.
  2. 4 to 6 months.
  3. 7 to 9 months.
  4. 10 to 12 months.
  5. 13 to 15 months.
  6. 16 to 18 months.
  7. 19 to 21 months.
  8. 22 to 23 months.

Appointments for Early Stimulation
Once the rapid evaluation of the development of a child is concluded and according to the result, the following appointment will be given.

For the following evaluation, each month if less than one year and greater of the year each 3 months (one between the 13 and 15 months of age, one between the 16 and 18 months, one between the 19 and 21 months and one between the 22 and 23 months).

If your psychomotor development is qualified as green and every month if you qualify as yellow.

  • Understand the benefits of early stimulation so that you can in turn guide parents about caring for children.
  • Training to evaluate the normal development of the child from 0 to 2 years and detect timely alterations or delays to refer him to a specialized consultation if necessary.

The role played by sensory stimuli is crucial, because if the main ingredient is missing is the love and affective availability of parents, the rest of stimuli will not have the same favorable effect that is why we must give them practical information that allows them to prevent alterations in the development of their children.
